HPE - Pre-K-12 - Part 1: Implementing the New SHAPE America National Health Education Standards

This interactive workshop, led by SHAPE National Trainer Allisha Blanchette will leave you equipped with a comprehensive understanding of the new SHAPE America National Health Education Standards. You’ll have an opportunity to examine the new themes in the revised standards through an exploration of the rationale, performance indicators, and other resources. We’ll identify how the revised standards can be used as a foundation for a skills-based health education curriculum and engage in teaching strategies you can use to integrate the health skills into your standards-based health education instruction.
Designed with flexibility in mind, the workshop is structured so that the content will make complete sense even if you are only able to attend either the morning or the afternoon session.
After the workshop, participants will be able to:
Identify key components and themes of the revised National Health Education Standards;
Explore how health skills and performance indicators can be used to guide curriculum and instruction; and
Outline a skills-based activity aligned with the revised National Health Education Standards.

Facing History and Ourselves’ approach to teaching US History emphasizes students’ capacity for civic agency and develops the historical inquiry skills students need to generate more nuanced understandings of US History. During this interactive workshop, we will share C3-style inquiries and units from our US History Curriculum Collection focusing on Democracy and Freedom and model teaching strategies that can be used in high school classrooms.

The FHAO Case Studies are embedded within New Skyline Social Science curriculum for 10th grade U.S. History.

Key Points: As a result of participating in this workshop, you will:
-A deeper understanding of Facing History’s approach to teaching US History through hands-on activities and exploration of voices not often included in textbooks.
-New strategies and pedagogy to promote democratic learning environments that allow students to grapple with complex histories and choices.
