Teaching US History with Facing History: Freedom & Democracy

Facing History and Ourselves’ approach to teaching US History emphasizes students’ capacity for civic agency and develops the historical inquiry skills students need to generate more nuanced understandings of US History. During this interactive workshop, we will share C3-style inquiries and units from our US History Curriculum Collection focusing on Democracy and Freedom and model teaching strategies that can be used in high school classrooms.

The FHAO Case Studies are embedded within New Skyline Social Science curriculum for 10th grade U.S. History.

Key Points: As a result of participating in this workshop, you will:
-A deeper understanding of Facing History’s approach to teaching US History through hands-on activities and exploration of voices not often included in textbooks.
-New strategies and pedagogy to promote democratic learning environments that allow students to grapple with complex histories and choices.
-Recommendations for tools and primary sources that could be used in US History courses.
